Sandy Point Pottery
Five years ago I retired from a career as an educator and took up pottery full time.To turn a lump of formless clay into something both useful and beautiful - a coffee mug, a bowl for fruit, a pitcher for flowers - is both satisfying and challenging. Throwing a pot on a wheel starts by centering the clay to control it. The process centers me. I have a workshop 13 km out Sandy Point Road where we live half time; the rest of the year we live in Durham, NC where I also have a home studio.
My pots are stoneware and porcelain fired to Cone 6 (1222 C, 2232 F) in an electric kiln. I make my own glazes, all of which are oven, dishwasher, and microwave safe. I enjoy experimenting with new glazes, surface decoration and new (for me) functional forms. Pots featured at this year’s Market include teapots, salt pigs, and plates. I welcome the design and production challenges of taking special orders. More about me and a gallery of some of my work can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/sandypointpottery/

Photo Art by Lori Skinner
In August 2014, I moved to Nova Scotia from British Columbia, and my husband and I immediately fell in love with this picturesque area. I started looking for cards with scenes of Nova Scotia to send to our friends and family out west, and when I couldn’t find any, I decided to make some of my own. I’ve always enjoyed taking photographs, and I especially like altering my photos to make them look like paintings.
When I lived in BC, I spent twenty-five years working in and around airplanes. Now that I'm here in Nova Scotia, I’ve fallen in love with lobster boats! As a result, boats—and nautical themes in general—are featured on many of my cards. I also love capturing the beauty of old architecture.
Getting behind the lens is introducing me to the visual delights of Nova Scotia, and selling my cards and framed prints at the Market is introducing me to its wonderful, friendly people. On all accounts, I feel very privileged to live here!
